As foreigners living and working in South Korea, it is heart-wrenching watching the tragedy of the sinking ferry, Sewol. Many, if not most, of us are teachers, and knowing that teachers and high school students are among the missing and dead is close to home. This fundraiser is aimed at starting a scholarship fund in memory of those who died, especially those who never had the opportunity to leave their mark. The scholarship will be named for Park Ji-Young, the one crew member who gave her life helping others. I hope that in providing hope for at least one young person (a needy and deserving student from the school where the majority of victims attended, ideally), we, the foreign community can honor the victims and show our solidarity with our host country.
It is a really sad time right now in South Korea. I live about 30 minutes away from the school that was on that ferry. You can feel the mood of the country just walking down the street. In my school it was worse, even my kindergarteners seemed to be affected. I you can, I know a donation would be much appreciated. Please keep the families and friends of those who were lost in your thoughts!
